Dermatomes & Myotomes Flashcards
What is a Dermatone?
refers to the skin area supplied by one dorsal root
what does the dorsal or posterior rami innervate?
intercostal muscles the muscles and skin in the extremities & anterior & lateral trunk
Why is examining sensory integration important?
See how well the CNS and it’s ability to process and integrate information is functioning
Does a peripheral nerve injury present with sensory impairments that parallel it’s distribution?
Yes, injury to the nerve will most likely correspond to it’s pattern of innervation.
Myotome
group of muscles innervated by a spinal nerve
If the spinal nerve is injured could there be damage to the reflexes?
Yes, depending if the spinal nerve has a reflex
Does injury to spinal nerve C1 show signs of decreased reflexes?
no
What muscles maybe weak if C2 spinal nerve is pinched?
Longus Colli, SCM, rectus capitis
If the patient presents with paresthesias of the cheek and side of the neck, which spinal nerve is injuried?
C3
What spinal nerve innervates dermatone affecting the temle, forehad and occiput?
C2
What muscle weakness might a patient have if the C4 spinal nerve was injured?
weakness in trapezius, levator scapulae
What nerve root is affected if the reflexes of biceps & brachioradialis are decreased and their is paresthesia thumb and index finger?
C6
What pattern of muscle weakness would C5 demonstrate?
deltoid area, anterior aspect of entire arm to base of thumb
Patient complains of prickling pain along the lateral posterior arm, what nerve root could be injured with this type of dermatome pain?
C7
Patient complains of weakness in extensor carpi ulnaris and flexor carpi ulnaris, what spinal nerve could be injured?
C8
