Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Name, Function cranial nerve II
Optic, vision
Name & Function cranial nerve III
Oculomotor, moves eye up, down, medially; raises upper eyelid; constricts pupil
What function does the trochlear nerve have?
moves eye medially and down
What cranial nerve is # V and what function does it have?
Trigeminal; facial sensation, chewing, sensation from tmj
What function does cranial nerve # VI have?
abducts eye
Name cranial nerve VIII and describe it’s function
vestibulocochlear; sensation of head position relative to gravity and head movement, hearing
Which cranial nerve is numbered X and what is its function?
Vagus; regulates viscera, swallowing, speech, taste
Which cranial nerve is responsible for swallowing, salivation, and taste?
IX, glossopharyngeal
Which cranial nerve is responsible for moving the tongue?
hypoglossal, XII
Are cranial nerves located in the PNS or CNS?
PNS
Where are cranial nerves located?
brain stem
Name & Function Cranial Nerve I
Olfatory, smell
What cranial nerves are sensory only?
olfactory, optic, vestibulocochlear
what cranial nerves are efferent only?
Oculomotor, trochlear, abducens, accessory, hypoglossal
what cranial nerves are both efferent and afferent nerves?
trigeminal, facial, glossopharyngeal, vagus
What nerve maybe affected if the patient can’t identify familiar odors?
Cranial nerve
Patient has difficulty reading an eye exam chart . Patient is unable to identify objects at a reasonable distance. What cranial nerve could be affected?
Optic
What test could show a positive oculomotor exam?
Patient has difficulty following an object (pencil) without rotating their head during the test.
Patient is unable to look down and inward. A positive test is indicated by an inability to depress the eyes/or complaints of diplopia. What cranial nerve is injured?
Trochlear
Patient is asked to close their eyes while a cotton ball or safety pin is touched to the patients face. If the patient is able to feel either a sharp or dull sensation what cranial nerve is intact?
Trigeminal
Patient is unable to make a lateral gaze, what cranial nerve is damaged?
Abducens
What would be a good sensory test for the facial nerve ?
Patient is asked to differentiate a salty popcorn piece from a sweat one.
Patient is unable to close eyes tight and whistle, what cranial nerve could be injured?
Facial
Patient is tested with a tunning fork to make sure they can hear. What nerve is being tested?
Vestibulocochlear
Therapist touches the pharynx with a tongue depressor and the patient does not gag, what cranial nerve maybe injured?
Glossopharyngeal or Vagus
This cranial nerve has both a sensory and motor component and a test for sensory would be testing the tongue for it’s ability to accurately identity sour from bitter food.
Glossopharyngeal
Patient is unable to shrug shoulders and maintain the position with manual resistance, what cranial nerve could be injured?
Accessory
What test could check for hypoglossal nerve injury?
Asking the patient to stick out their tongue and observing if the tongue fully protrudes or if it deviates?
If the gag reflex is absent what would the therapist check additionally to rule out glossopharyngeal damage?
therapist would also examine the movement of the soft palate and uvula
