What is eczema?
A
Atopic eczema is a chronic, itchy, inflammatory skin condition that affects people of all ages, although it presents most frequently in childhood. Episodic disease of flares and remissions.

What causes eczema?
A
- Not fully understood
- +ve FHx of atopy
- Primary genetic defect in skin barrier - tiny gaps allow irritants, microbes and allergens to elicit an immune response causing the sore itchy patches
- Exacerbating factors such as triggers/allergens and infections

What are some triggers for eczema?
A
- Soap, detergents
- Over heating/rough clothing
- Skin infections
- Pets
- Pollen
- Food
- House-dust mites
- Stress

Where is eczema most common on the body?
A
Flexor surfaces of the limbs, face and neck

What nail changes are associated with eczema?
A
Pitting and ridging

What is the acute and chronic presentation of eczema?
A
acute - itchy papules and vesicles often weepy
chronic - dry scaly itchy patches, can be erythematous in paler skin or grey/brown in richly pigmented skin
can be excoriations from scratching
