Indications of topical or oral antibiotic?
Acne vulagaris
MOA of topical or oral antibiotic?
Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis.
Adverse effects of topical or oral antibiotic?
Skin irritations
Dryness
Urticaria
Erythema
GI disturbances
Colitis
Warnings of topical or oral antibiotic?
Topical:
- Don’t prescribe in hypersensitivity.
- Caution in IBD, atopic conditions, or abx-associated colitis.
- If diarrhoea occurs, stop medication.
- use in pregnancy if needed.
Oral:
- Avoid in hypersensitivity.
- Most tetracyclines are contraindicated in pregnancy, breastfeeding, and children age <12.
- Avoid tetracyclines in myasthenia gravis, SLE, hepatic and renal impairment.
Topical abx should be prescribed with benzoyl peroxide due to risk of abx resistance.
Interactions of topical or oral antibiotic?
Systemic absorption can follow topical applications consider any interactions.
Monitoring of topical or oral antibiotic?
Check if acne has improved.
Pt educations of topical or oral antibiotic?
Applications of topical abx is usually once or twice a day.
