MOA of azelaic acid?

A

Antibacterial effects by inhibiting synthesis of cellular proteins in anaerobic and aerobic bacteria.

(Azelaic acid is naturally found in grains such as barley, wheat and rye -antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.)

Blistering
Flaking
Irritation
Swelling
Pruritus

A

Avoid in hypersensitivity to the active substance.

Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and with mucous membranes.

Caution if prescribing to pregnant or breastfeeding women.

- mild

Adverse effects of topical steroid cream?

A

Local adverse effects of potent and very potent topical corticosteroids can cause:
- skin thinning
- striae
- telangiectasia

When used on face:
- perioral dermatitis
- cause or exacerbate acne

Withdrawal of topical corticosteroids:
- rebound worsening of underlying skin condition
- adrenal suppression (rare)
- systemic adverse effects

Warnings of topical steroid cream?

A

Do not use where infection is present -can worsen the infection or spread.

Do not use potent corticosteroids on facial lesions present AND treatment courses should be short.

None.

If several topical agents are being used on the same area of skin, applications should be spaced out to allow absorption of pharmacologically active agents.
- Emollients should be applied LAST.

Review pt 1-2 wks of tx and check for improvement in symptoms and if following tx instructions correctly.

A

Aims to relieve inflammation and improve their skin problem.

Will have a full effect in 1-2 weeks.

Inform how and when to apply the typical corticosteroid and that emollients should be applied 5mins after this.

Warn risk of skin damage if tx applied to wrong areas
