Derailment Flashcards
Arguments
- Derailment is a common fixture in the human experience.
- Derailment is a key developmental risk factor for psychopathology.
- The risk is enhanced under the contexts of stress.
- Those higher in derailment seem more sensitive to the consequences of negative feedback.
Derailment as a trait
Temporally stable, enduring, not the result of an event
Derailment
Inability to meaningfully connect one’s current self with their past self
Properties of derailment
Not determined by an objective change or sameness, but how/if the individual perceives change or sameness
Outcomes NOT dictated by valence- even if you feel better than you were in the past, derailment is still bad
Derailment is hallmarked by a temporal discordance of the self- discrepancy of who they are now and were in the past
Associations with derailment- if high derailment,
Lower life satisfaction, self esteem, positive affect, sense of purpose, identity commitment
Higher negative affect, perceived stress, depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, identity exploration
Does derailment moderate the relationship between psychological stress and indicators of well being?
Derailment predicts worse affective outcomes when stressed
Derailment predicts worse self-concept when stressed
Derailment predicts worse subjective experience of the stressor
Does feedback type moderate relationship between derailment and indicators of well being?
Yes, when stressed, feedback type matters more for those higher in derailment, felt about the same when receiving positive feedback and significantly worse when receiving negative feedback
Emotional reactivity
People w high derailment have more negative emotional reactivity but not more positive
