Since when / How long
Depuis quand
- If asking about something that is still going on.
Depuis - Three things to note
- Used for something that began in the past and continues into the future.
- Indicates a period of time
- Is used with a PRESENT verb, NOT A PAST verb.
- OR the IMPERFECT if the action described is interrupted.
Ex. Il dormait depuis trois heures quend je suis arrive
He had been sleeping for two hours when I arrived.
How long have you lived here
Depuis quand habitez-vouz ici?
I have lived here for two years;
I have lived here since 2009.
J’habite ici depuis deux ans.
J’habite ici depuis 2009.
We have been waiting for one hour.
On attende depuis une heure.
Other way of saying; depuis
Ça fait ………….. que
This surround the time / period you are describing.
Ex. Ça fait une heure que je attende.
I have been waiting for one hour.
PENDANT - Points
- Refers to past; something finished
2. Use PAST TENSE verb or VERB referring to future (using ALLER for example)

EX. Pendant combien de temps tu as étudié le français?

I studied French for 5 years.
J’ai étudié le français pendant cinq ans.
Future example of Pendant: I am going to live in England for 2 years.
Je vais vivre en Angleterre pendant deux ans.
Il y a RULES
AGO
- Must be used with a PAST (can use IMPERFECT)
- Refer to something completed in the past
- ALWAYS comes before the time frame it’s referring to
I arrived there two hours ago.
Je suis arrive là il y a deux heures.
She was there two hours ago.
Elle était là il y a dix minutes.
Two weeks ago, I had diner with my son.
