1881 Tennessee enacted a segregated railway law this was passed on to every southern state
plessy v feguson
seperate but equal
segregation in the north
in Chicago 5000 AA’s concentrated in one area
in NY Harlem followed suit with 23000 AA’s by 1900
registration laws
resticted AA vote and made them a powerless minority by 1895
taxes and tests
AA’s had to pay taxes or complete literacy tests or whites would use the grandfather clause to stop AA’s voting

only AA congressman retired in 1901 leaving no AA representation in congress
lynching
lynching would be the punishment given for minor offences by AA’s. the law was ignored in the south as its upholders favoured mob rule
westward expansion
40,000 AA’s travelled west however majority lacked the expertise to create a home away from prejudice
