HQ USAF

A

10 Major subdivisions of the Air Force assigned a major part of the Air Force mission. Directly subordinate to HQ

A

Directly below a MAJCOM & provides operational leadership and supervision. Is assigned subordinate units such as wings, groups, and squadrons

WING

A

Below the NAF. Has a distinct mission with a significant school.
primary mission group + supporting groups.

*Only echelon of a command that can deploy and sustain itself for indefinite length of time.

4groups within: Operations, maintenance, mission, support, medical

A

A wing that has operational route and related operational mission activity assigned to it.

Air Base Wing

A

Owing that performed a support rather than a operational mission. Sometime provides functional support to a MAJCOM

Specialized Mission Wing

A

A way that before they specialize mission and usually does not have a aircraft or misses assigned to it.

5 COC

Group

A

A level of commitment between wings and squadrons. Groups bring together multiple squadrons or lower echelon units to provide a broader capability.

Ex. Mission support group pull together several squadrons in a variety of areas

6 COC

Squadron

A

A basic unit in the Air Force. These are the basic building blocks organizations in the Air Force providing specific operational or support capability. May either be mission unit such as operational flying squadron or functional such as civil engineer in security or maintenance.

Lowest echelon that can deploy on its own but cannot support itself indefinitely like a wing.

Flight

A

Not a formal echelon of command. If internal subdivision is required, it may consist of section and then elements. A flight may either be numbered named, alpha, or functional.
