Major Depressive Disorder: Criteria A requires 5 or more of the following symptoms

- Significant weight loss when no dieting or weight gain, or decrease in appetite nearly every day
- Insomnia or hypersomnia nearly every day
- Psychomotor agitation nearly every day
- Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day
- Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt nearly every day
- Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness, nearly every day
- Recurrent thoughts of death, recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan, or a suicide attempt or a specific plan for killing self

Biological causes of Depression
- Genetic: family history is a strong predictor
- Kindling effect: once you have a depressive or manic episode, likely to have another because episode may cause changes in the brain
- Chronic medical issues may cause depression (AIDS, Arthritis, Lupus, MS, etc.)
