Depression (treatment) Flashcards
The cognitive approach to treating depression
What is the aim of CBT?
To change maladaptive thoughts and beliefs
What does CBT mainly focus on?
The beliefs, not the events
How was it formed?
Uses an extension to Ellis’s ABC model by adding DEF
What does ABCDEF stand for?
A - activating event
B - beliefs
C - consequences
D - disputing irrational thoughts and beliefs
E - effects of disputing and effective attitude to life
F - new feelings that are produced
What are the three different types of disputing?
- Logical - self defeating beliefs don’t follow logically from info available
- Empirical - self defeating beliefs may not be consistent with reality
- Pragmatic - emphasises the lack of usefulness of self defeating beliefs
What are the other three aspects of CBT?
- Homework
- Behavioural activation
- Unconditional positive regard
What does homework involve?
Asking clients to complete assignments between therapy sessions - keeps client busy
What does behavioural activation involve?
Becoming more active and participating in activities the client previously enjoyed
What does unconditional positive regard involve?
Convincing the client of their value as a human being and establishing a respectful, appreciative and comfortable relationship between the client and themselves (the therapist)
