G-Guilt (increased)

What are the 2 cardinal symptoms of depression?
1) Loss of interest or pleasure from every day activities
2) Depressed mood, most of the day, nearly every day
What do the symptoms behind SIGECAPS define?
A major depressive episode (MDE)
T or F?
Depression is easy to diagnose
False
It’s really hard because some patients don’t look depressed or don’t say the word depressed because of the negative stigma. Some patients don’t even feel depressed, they’ve just lost interest
T or F?
Depression is linked to worse outcomes when coupled with cardiovascular disease?
True.
For example, twice as likely to have cardiac events within 2 years of an MI.
This is most likely due to physical inactivity
Name the 2 screening tests used for depression
PHQ2 and PHQ9
PHQ2 looks for the “cardinal symptoms”, PHQ9 more for SIGECAPS
What’s the difference between bipolar 1 and bipolar 2?
1) Bipolar 1-patient have had mania but may also have had hypomania or major depressive episodes
2) Bipolar 2-Patient has had BOTH hypomania and a major depressive episode
What’s the different between a MDE (Major Depressive Episode) and a MDD (Major Depressive Disorder)
MDE=you can have these in bipolar, meaning you experience depression along with mania at times.
MDD=you only experience depressive episodes, never mania or hypomania
How does mania differ from depression?
Mania is basically someone who gets really excited about things, doesn’t need to sleep, has ideas all over the place, very goal oriented and focus on activities, and very talkative. Pretty much seems the opposite of a depressed person.
What is the different between cyclothymia and dysthymia?
Cyclothymia=hypomania and subsyndromal depression
Dythymia=subsyndromal depression only. (Like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh)
*both of these are diagnosed if they last more than 2 years in adults, 1 year in kids
Highlight some of the differences between grief/bereavement and depression.
Grief: Often accompanies death of someone close. The thoughts of the patient are on the deceased, feelings come in waves. Self esteem is maintained. If suicidal thoughts, they are transient and only because the person wants to be with the deceased.
Depression: More persistent, not set off by certain thoughts/actions. Persistent suicidal thoughts, Lack of self esteem.
