suicidal interests reduced guilt / worthlessness energy reduced fatigue concentration appetite changes (weight loss or gain) psychomotor retardation or agitation sleep disturbance (insomnia or hypersomnia)
4 or more symptoms for 2 or more weeks plus depressed mood OR anhedonia

No past mania should be ruled out
- Anxious Distress; common, involves a lot of worrying/anxiety.
- Mixed Features; minor displays of mania/hypomania.
- Melancholic Features; very severe depression, no joy for anything.
- Atypical Features; mood reactivity to environmental events.
- Psychotic Features; hallucinations, etc.
- Catatonia; no speaking/responding to things for a prolonged period.
- Peripartum Onset; depression experienced due to pregnancy/birth.
- Seasonal Pattern (SAD); mood reacting to weather/seasons.

First between 15 and 29 years and half these will have multiple episodes
