How were Farmers affected from Great Depression?
Already bad in 1920s but got worse , overproduction meant sold less so prices fell , dust bowls meant many farmers had to abandon their farms and find other work
1932 - 1 in 20 farmers evicted
How did great depression affect unemployment?
1932 - 13 million unemployed
1-2 million ‘hobos’ looking for work
Alabama 1/3 white people and 1/2 black people unemployed
Wages cut 25%
How did Great Depression affect homelessness?
1932 - 1/4 of million lost their homes
Some deliberately got arrested to spent night in prison
Many lived in Hoovervilles (scrap metal shelters on edge of town) or benches
You could pay to ‘sleep on the line’ sitting upright on washing line in a hall
How did Great Depression affect hunger?
110 died of hunger
Some towns ran their own relief programmes (providing jobs, temporary homes and food)
Salvation Army set up soup kitchens
People queued in bread lines for free food
Some rich people offered help (Al Capone)

100,000 companies closed
House building fell by 82%
Industrial production fell by 45%
Ford had employed 120,000 in Detroit which fell to 37,000 by 1931
By 1933 all US steel corporation workers were part time
