What is depression
A mental disorder characterised by low mood and low energy levels
Three behavioural characteristics of depression and a brief description of each
-low energy levels(has a knock-on effect, can have opposite effect causing agitation when a person is unable to relax)
-change in sleeping patterns and appetite (insomnia/hypersomnia, eating may increase or decrease resulting in weight gain/loss)
-aggression and self-harm (verbally/physically aggressive to others or towards themselves)
Three emotional characteristics of depression and brief description of each
-lowered mood (extreme levels of sadness)
-anger (experiencing extreme feelings of anger which can be directed at others/themselves)
-lowered self-esteem (tendency to have incredibly low self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness and emptiness)
Three cognitive characteristics of depression and brief description of each
-poor concentration (inability to focus and poor decision making)
-negative bias (paying more attention to negative aspects and ignoring positive ones eg recalling unhappy rather than happy events)
-absolutist thinking (all or nothing thinking meaning events are perceived as either absolutely awful or amazing)
