- short history
- biological symptoms e.g. weight loss, sleep disturbance
- patient worried about poor memory
- MMSE score variable
- global memory loss (dementia characteristically causes recent memory loss)

DSM 5 criteria for major depressive disorder
A
> 5 of the following during the same 2-weeks with at least one of the symptoms being (1) or (2):
- low mood
- reduced interest/ pleasure in activities
- weight loss
- Insomnia or hypersomnia
- Psychomotor agitation
- loss of energy
- Feelings of worthlessness/ guilt
- reduced concentration
- suicidal ideation
