Depression Flashcards
Sertraline Primary mech
SSRI
reuptake of serotonin inhibited so more accumulates in synapse (more uptake elevates and regulates mood, personality and wakefulness)
Sertraline drug target
Serotonin receptor
Sertraline side effects
GI effects (nausea, diarrhoea), sexual dysfunction, anxiety, insomnia
why must SSRIs be gradually weaned off?
dependance on SSRI can lead to crashing and even worse symptoms when medication is suddenly stopped
Other unintended effects of sertealine
mild dopamine transported inhibition and partial CYP2D6 disinhibition at high doses
Name 3 SSRIs
sertraline, citalopram, fluoxetine
Venlafaxine prim mech
SNRI (Serotonin-norepinephrine-reuptake inhibtor)
similar to SSRIs but with norepinephrine as well, though it has a more potent effect on. serotonin
Venlafaxine drug target
serotonin receptor and norepinephrine receptor
Venlafaxine side effects
GI effects (nausea, diarrhoea), sexual dysfunction, anxiety, insomnia, hypertension (at higher doses)
Mirtazapine prim mech
central presynaptic Alpha-2-adrenergic receptor antagonist, causing increased serotonin and norepinephrine release.
central 5HT2 receptor antagonist so that 5HT1 receptors can cause antidepressant effects unopposed
mirtazapine drug targets
Alpha-2-adrenergic receptor and 5HT2 receptor
Mirtazapine side effects
weight gain and sedation
