Depositional Landforms Flashcards
Terminal moraine
High mound extending across the valley to mark the maximum advance of the ice sheet
Lateral moraine
Derived from frost shattering of the valley sides, carried at the edge of the glacier - on melting a side embankment is formed
Recessional moraine
Erratics
Picked up and carried by ice
Deposited in areas of different geology
Drumlins
Smooth, elongated mounds of till ( unsourced rock, clay and sand deposited by ice
50m high and over 1km in length
Smoothed by abrasion with a steep upstream side and a gently sloping downside
Form a swarm
Till sheets
Found behind terminal moraine in low-lying areas
Wide areas of flat relief with a covering of glacial till
Variable in composition, dependent on the nature of the rocks over which the ice has been moved.
