Depositional Landform 1 Flashcards
What is spits?
Spits is a long narrow extension of sand which has one end attached to coasltine and other projecting out to sea.
What is Mudflats? (formation of it)
Mudflats are formed of finer material which flocculates (stick together) in shallow water of estuaries.
How is salt marshes formed?
Overtime, mudflats are colonised by algae, which makes sediment to move less. When mudflat is stable and have enough nutrients, saltmarsh plants can grow and salt marsh is formed.
What is tombolo?
Tombolo is where sand/gravel bar connects on island to the mainland.
How is tombolo formed?
Tombolo is formed when wave action deposits sediment between an island and mainland.
What are offshore bars?
Offshore bars are underwater ridges of sand and gravel formed of wave action parallel to shore
How do offshore bars form?
Offshore bars formed when wave action deposits sand and gravel parallel to shore.
What are barrier beaches?
Barrier beaches are beaches that run parallel to the mainland
How do barrier beaches form?
Barrier beaches are formed when wave and tidal currents deposits sediment parallel to coastline. Overtime, wind and vegetation stabilize these deposits, forming barrier beaches that protect coasts.
What are ridges?
Elevated, linear formations on earth surfaces.
What are runnels?
A small stream
How do beach profiles change through the year?
Winter: Stronger waves, make beach narrower and steeper
Summer: Calmer waves, make beach wider and flatter
