Depersonalization Disorder (Ch. 27 Dell) Flashcards

Q

What about those with drug induced depersonalization?

A

In summary, then, we can safely say that chronic depersonalization can occur in the context of widely varying traumatic stressors, mainly chronic childhood trauma, later severe life stress, and overwhelming states of other emotional illness. What all these have in common might be an overwhelming challenge to one’s sense of self which, in individuals genetically predisposed, might trigger a chronic depersonalization state. In those less vulnerable, a more transient depersonalization state might be triggered that spontaneously resolves, thus the phenomena of transient depersonalization, acute stress disorder, depersonalization occurring only during a panic attack or during a major depression, and so on. This model of depersonalization is one that needs empirical testing. If broadened, this interpretation of depersonalization could even account for individuals presenting with drug- induced depersonalization, sometimes in the absence of significant traumatic stressors. One explanation is that these drugs, in depersonalization-susceptible individuals, may induce a profound alteration in self-state that is experienced as highly destabilizing, in effect traumatic, thus triggering a depersonalization reaction. The other explanation is that these drugs act as highly specific chemical triggers that dysregulate already vulnerable neurochemical systems that may underlie the neurobiology of DPD, even in the absence of a subjectively stressful experience. Indeed, histories obtained from DPD sufferers with drug- induced onset lend support to both scenarios.

Q

What are common triggers of depersonalization disorder?

A

DPD is commonly triggered by severe stress, -This can be after a prolonged period of severe stress and adjustment efforts -childhood trauma or later life environmental stress -internal stress (such as a severe episode of mental illness) -chemical stress (such as tetrahydrocannabinol, DPD can be triggered by various extreme emotional states, specific drugs, or seemingly nothing at all
