deontology Flashcards
who is deontology associated with?
Kant
what does an absolutist approach mean?
some things are always right and some always wrong
an absolutist theory’s advantage is…
it can fit into different religious laws - 10 commandments
provides consistency across society - morality becomes a habit
disadvantage of deontology
peter singer - lacks emotivism
“closed system” - people do not inquire into the reason for their actions which makes them dangerous
takes away their humanity
An alternative is prima facies duties by ross
Lacks flexibility- makes it rigid and hard to alter
Deontology might not be able to achieve the moral principles set and stop us from doing ACTUAL good
advantages of deontology
Universability - humans have a sense of moral duty to do what we feel is right and wrong
Absolutist approach - can be applied to religious laws like the 10 commandments
it provides consistency across society
morality becomes a habit
One duty and that duty is to do good - first formulation
first formulation
Kant wants to make rules where we live by objectively no matter of class ethnicity gender age race etc. BUT only good if done with goodwill and not good behavior
second formulation
Asks us to respect humanity and consider other peoples feelings and need.
