Q

What should you tell the patient with regards to maintenance?

A

Expect some discomfort initially- it’s like wearing a new pair of shoes.

Speech may be impaired for a few days, excess saliva- just something foreign in the mouth that it is not used to.

May be sore when eating.

Remove dentures after eating and rinse in water.
Clean the dentures morning and night with a soft brush and soap- this should be done over a basin of water.
Never use hot or boiling water- will melt the acrylic.

Denture cleansers should only be used outside the mouth.
Don’t soak for more than 10 minutes.
Soak overnight in plain water.
Thoroughly rinse after being in the cleanser.
Ensure to clean your natural teeth as normal with fluoride toothpaste, twice per day.

If the denture does become sore and you cannot wear it then don’t wear it but try put it back in 24-48 hours before the review appointment so that I can see where it is digging in.

Visit your dentist regularly for check ups of the denture and the gums/mucosa.
