dentition Flashcards
features of the tooth
crown cusp enamel dentine pulp horn gingiva neck - cementoenamel junction pulp cavity periodontal ligament root canal
general features of maxillary teeth
more buccal wear and wider
general features of mandibular teeth
more lingual wear and narrower
incisors
flat and blade like, chiseled edge
canines
conical crown diamond edge long root single pointed cusp on bulbous crown medial and distal lingual fossa
premolars
rounder and shorter than canines
2 cusps
usually single root
molars
large
square
4 or 5 cusps
2 or 3 roots
maxillary incisors
rounder root, cingulum
mandibular incisors
smaller and narrower
maxillary central incisor
mesially longer and straighter crown, distally rounder corner, root deviates distally
maxillary lateral incisor
mesially longer and straighter crown, distally rounder corner, longer root curves distally
mandibular central incisor
vertical on both sides, crown smaller than lateral incisor, root deviates distally
mandibular lateral incisor
bigger crown than central incisor, shorter distally, crown buccal surface curves distally, more wear distally, root deviates distally
maxillary canine
longest root, round and triangular, mesial diamond shape, pointed cingulum
mandibular canine
smaller, no cingulum, distal diamond shape, cusp less pointed, root can bifurcate, distally inclined
maxillary 1st premolar
often 2 roots (separated by mesial groove), longer cusp buccally, cusps separated by mesiodistal groove
maxillary 2nd premolar
1 root, longer, 2 cusps of more equal length, longer distal cup
mandibular 1st premolar
1 root, central enamel ridge, buccal cusp longer and larger than lingual
mandibular 2nd premolar
1 root, 3 cusps, occlusally appears square, buccal cusp longer
maxillary molars
3 roots - 2 buccal and 1 lingual
mandibular molars
2 roots - 1 mesial and 1 distal
maxillary 1st molar
4 cusps splayed roots wide crown erupts and wears early inter proximal contact facets
maxillary 2nd molar
4 cusps
smaller narrower roots that deviate distally
contact facets
maxillary 3rd molar
triangular outline occlusally
one mesial contact
mandibular 1st molar
5 cusps - 3 buccal (higher), 2 lingual
crown longer medio-distally
distally curved roots (distal less so)
mandibular 2nd molar
4 cusps - 2 lingual, 2 buccal
less oblong than M1 - more square
buccal surface bulbous
roots closer together than M1 and distally curved
mandibular 3rd molar
similar to M2 but smaller - roots often fused and distally inclined
