What is preventative dentistry
- practice of caring for you teeth to keep them healthy
- avoids gum disease, cavities and tooth erosion
- brush twice a day + floss
- lifestyle changes too
•dental hygienist may educate patients on preventative dentistry
What is caries and symptoms
- tooth decay due to the breakdown of tooth because of bacteria activities
- pain and difficulty eating (exposed nerves)
Tooth erosion + symptoms
Wearing away of enamel by acids
Enamel is the hard protective coating which protects the sensitive dentin underneath
•pain and sensitivity
Dentine Hypersensitivity + causes + symptoms
Tooth becomes very sensitive
- receding gums
- enamel erosion
- excessive brushing
Symptoms:
-sharp pain in response to stimulus (drinking evaporation)
What is gum disease
- condition where gums become swollen, sore or infected
- Gingivitis: mild case of gum disease when blood appears when you brush your teeth, very common
If left untreated it can lead to..
•Periodontitis:
Affects tissues that support teeth and hold them in place. - bone that supports the teeth begin to break down
If left untreated can lead to loosening and falling out of teeth
What causes gum disease and how can we prevent it
Cause:
•build up of harmful bacteria in plaque.
•bacteria irritate the gums
•redness swelling and bleeding
Preventing:
•good oral hygiene (brushing flossing)
Implications of gum disease
- gum abscesses
- receding gums
- loose teeth
- teeth loss
Describe root canal treatment and when it is needed
What is it:
•procedure used to treat inflamed or infected pulp
•may be needed because of deep decay or repeated dental treatment on the tooth
Procedure of root canal treatment
1) pulp removed
2) inside of tooth cleaned and disinfected
3) filled and sealed with gutla-percha
3) crown or filling for protection

What is the bacteria that cause dental caries
Streptococcus mutans and lactobacillus species
