Dentine Hypersensitivity Flashcards

1
Q

Definition dentine hypersensitivity?

A

Short, sharp pain arising from exposed dentine in response to stimuli
Can’t be ascribed to another dental defect or pathology

Q

What causes pain in dentine hypersensivitiy?

A

Dentine exposed
Pain stimuli - open tubulues in exposed dentine make hyper-sensitivty
Stimuli causes fluid shift in tubules exciting pulpal nerves = pain

Q

Manage dentine hypersensitivity?

A

Pt education
Prevention
Desensitising toothpaste - one that occludes dentinal tubules/ decrease nerve excitability
