what is depression?
characterised by depressed or sad mood, diminished interest in activities that used to be pleasurable, weight gain or loss, fatigue, inappropriate guilt & difficulties concentrating, as well as recurrent thoughts of death

what is psychosis?
people lose some contact with reality,
might involve seeing/hearing things that others cannot see/hear (hallucinations)
believing things that are not actually true (delusions)
what is bipolar disorder?
mental health condition that affects your moods, which can swing from 1 extreme to another
what is schizophrenia?
a mental disorder characterized by disruptions in thought processes, perceptions, emotional responsiveness, and social interactions.
what is anorexia nervosa?
self starvation & weight loss
very dangerous, usually dieting driven by intense fear of gaining weight/fat
what is bulimia nervosa?
binge eating in a short period of time then throwing up
dental implications of bulimia nervosa?
- erosion on lingual, palatal, occlusal surfaces
- angular cheilitis
- glossitis
- candidiasis
- oral ulceration
- xerostomia (medications)
how can we help a patient with eating disorder?
- offer safe space for pt to open up
- dont lecture pt
- if patient does open up, know how to signpost for help
- offer support
