4
Q

How malocclusion develops

A

When there is improper position and contact between the teeth that lead to inefficient chewing, bit discomfort, excessive wear and premature loss of teeth.

7
Q

Developmental cause of caudal hook

A

the horse is born either parrot-mouthed or monkey mouthed
-2nd to another molar malocclusion that forces the jaw to disalign

8
Q

Step tooth/ step molars.

A

Molar arcade develops stepped-like appearance.
this is due to missing tooth allowing the opposing tooth to grow into the void.
treatment: regular floating

10
Q

how to reduce the problem in ramps

A

The dominant tooth must be reduced to allow the opposing one to recover

Q

Enamel points. include etiology

A

Sharp points on the outside of the upper molars and inside of the lower molars.
-etiology: when horse stops chewing as far sideways leading to the unopposed edge tooth getting longer and having the enamel from razor sharp points

12
Q

Sheared Molar Table

A

Extreme angulation of chewing surface of molars. this is the result from the lack of lateral excursion or side-to-side chewing.
problem of this will lead to poor utilization of feed,

13
Q

Accentuated Transverse Ridges

A

Enlarged ridges that run across chewing surfaces of molars. Etiology: shift in jaw alignment or chewing in proper sideways motion.

15
Q

Solution for accentuated transverse ridges

A

Reduce enlarged ridges and allow opposing teeth to recover and the horse will chew correctly. Will improve when existing malocclusions are corrected.

16
Q

Periodontal pockets

A

Gum disease around tooth causing an area for feed to pocket. Etiology: malocclusion or misalignment of teeth

17
Q

Diastema

A

The space that occurs between two adjoining teeth. Caused by malocclusion
this may due to feed being trapped between teeth, progressive wear and severe periodontal disease

18
Q

Overbite. include treatment

A

Upper incisors protrude in front of lower incisors.
Treat: correct malocclusion/length of upper incisors

19
Q

Underbite

A

Lower incisors protrude in front of lower incisors
Treat: correct malocclusions/length of lower incisors

20
Q

Ventral curvature (smile)

A

Outer corner lower incisors grow longer relative to outer corner upper incisors.
Etiology: may occur when deciduous caps are retained on upper corner incisors preventing normal growth of permanent incisors

21
Q

Dorsal Curvature (frown)

A

Outer corner upper incisors grow longer relative to outer corner lower incisors.
This may occur when deciduous caps are retained on lower corner incisors preventing normal growth of permanent incisors.

22
Q

Offset or Diagonal Bite

A

Upper incisors on one side of mouth are excessively long and lower incisors on opposite side are excessively long (diagonal)
etiology: chewing more in one direction, cribbing or wood chewing
- this can lead to TMJ problem

23
Q

Signs to observe during TMJ issue

A
  1. Head tossing due to discomfort
  2. Resisting bridling/head shy
  3. sticking the tongue out
  4. severe performance issue
  5. Decrease appetite
24
Q

Bone Spurs

A

Mandibular periostitis or abnormal bony growth due to trauma
Treatment: surgical removal

25
Q

Sedation of choice for mental block in bone spur surgery

A

10-20 ug/kg IV Detomidine HCl

26
Q

Wolf tooth

A

Small shallow rooted teeth in front of premolars upper jaw

27
Q

Blind wolf tooth

A

Abnormal wolf tooth that does not break through gums.

28
Q

Stomatitis

A

Inflammation of the mouth
Etiology: trauma, chemical, irritants, infectious diseases.

29
Q

Oral Tumors

A

Equine sarcoid
-small, wart-like lesions to large, ulcerated fibrous growths.

30
Q

6 clinical entities of sarcoids

A
  1. occult
  2. verrucose
  3. Nodular
    4,, Fibroblastic
  4. Mixed
  5. Malevolent
