5
Q

why is it important to know developmental dates

A
  • choice of restoration on primary teeth
  • timing of radiograph for ortho
  • timing of ortho
  • impact of dental trauma on primary and permanent teeth
  • effect of medical conditions on teeth

Q

when do primary cs, ds and es erupt

A
  • c’s erupt at 19 months
  • d’s at 16 months
  • e’s at 27-29 months with lowers erupting before maxillary usually

8
Q

what are common occlusal features of primary dentition

A
  • incisor teeth tend to be spaced. this prevents permanent teeth from crowding
  • ‘anthropoid space’

9
Q

what can you say about lower e compared to upper es

A
  • lower e is much longer mesiodistally than upper e

- teeth are in same vertical plane which is known as flush terminal plane

Q

what can u say about incisor relationship in primary dentition

A
  • more edge to edge
  • maxillary incisions tend to be more upright
  • sometimes anterior open bite of sucking habit

11
Q

what is leeway space and what is the value

A
  • primary teeth in buccal segments have a larger combined mesiodistal width than the permanent teeth that replace them
  • amount by which the combined size of a primary canine and primary molar teeth exceeds the combined mesiodistal widths of the permanent canine and premolars (1.5mm in maxillary arch, 2.5mm in mandibular arch)

12
Q

eruption of primary dentition v permanent dentition

A

primary dentition erupts more or less continuously over a 2 year period

16
Q

when do upper 2s erupt

A

8 years

17
Q

what may u notice about maxillary permanent incisors when they erupt

A
  • incisors may be spaced

- lateral incisors have a distal inclination

18
Q

what if a maxillary lateral erupts before central

A

-something impeding eruption of central eg. supernumerary, history of dental trauma, pathology

19
Q

when do mandibular canines and first premolars erupt

A

-around 10 years of age

20
Q

when should u palpate buccal sulcus and why

A
  • maxillary canine closely associated with distal aspect of lateral incisor
  • should be palpated clinically high in buccal sulcus from age 10
21
Q

when should you investigate discrepancies

A
  • dentitions falling substantially outside range of tooth eruption
  • individual teeth delayed by 6 months
