What are the responsibilities of the dental team in regards to sg

What is neglect and examples
-Failure to meet a child’s needs, physical emotional and/or psychological likely to result in serious impairment of Childs health and development
- Failure to provide adequate diet
- Lack of stimulation
- Failure to make proper arrangements for hc
- Inadequate clothing
- Lack of appropriate supervision
- Leaving children alone at an inappropriate age
Signs of neglect
- Frequent minor injuries
- Recurrent infection
- Poor hygiene: smelly, dirty
- Abnormalities of hair/skin
- Developmental delay
- Inappropriate/inadequate clothing
- Non attendance at school
- Constant hunger
What is dental neglect
- Most common chronic diseases in the world, the mere presence of dental caries or other oral pathology cannot be considered to constitute dental neglect
- No threshold number of carious teeth, beyond which is a diagnosis of dental neglect Made
- Peristance failure to meet a Childs basic oral health needs, likely to result in serious impairment of a Childs oral or general health of development
Impactof dental neglect
- Toothache
- Disturbed sleep
- Difficulty eating
- Absence from school
- Repeated antibiotics
- Exposure to morbidity associated with GA

- Life threatening systemic illnesses
Features of particular concern regarding dental neglect
- Severe untreated dental disease, particularly that is obvious to a lay person
- Dental disease resulting in significant impact on the child
-Parent or carers have access to but persistently fail to obtain treatment for child eg irregular attendance repeated failed appts failure to complete tx returning in pain at repeated intervals requiring repeated ga for extraction
How many children presenting with dento facial infection were known to social services
- 40.7% of children
- More than 50% presenting with infection were between 5-8yo
How to respond to dental neglect
- Tiered response recommended
- 3 stages of intervention, implemented according to level of concern
- PReverntive dental team management
- Preventive multi agency management
- Child protection referral
What does WNB stand for and mean
- Was not brought
- Missed healthcare appts may be an indicator of neglect
-Dentists encourages to consider the child as was not brought and to assess the nee for early MD info sharing
