Dental Caries Flashcards
What is dental caries according to Shafers?
Dental caries is irreversible microbial disease of the calcified tissues of the teeth characterised by demineralisation of inorganic portion and the destruction of the organic substances of the tooth which often may lead to cavitation.
What is dental caries according to sturdevent?
Dental caries is an infectious microbial disease of the tooth that results in localised dissolution and destruction of calcified tissue.
Dental caries according to WHO?
It is defined as localised post eruptive pathological process of external origin involving softening of the hard tissue and proceeding to the formation of cavity.
GV Blacks classification
A. Class I B. Class II C. Class III D. Class IV E. Class V F. Class VI
Class I GV Black
- pits and fissures of molars and premolars
- occlusal 2/3rd of Buccal and lingual surface of molars
- lingual surface of maxillary incisors
Class II GV Blacks
Cavity in proximal surface of molar and premolar
Class III GV Blacks
Proxima surface of anterior teeth that do not involve incisal edge
Class IV GV Black
Restoration on the proximal surface of anterior teeth that do involve the incisal edge.
Class V GV Black
Restoration on the cervical third of the facial or lingual surfaces of all teeth(except pits and fissure)
Class VI GV Black
- incisal edge of anterior teeth
- cusp of posterior teeth
- usually start in a traumatic or a formative defect
Clinical forms of caries based on severity
- Incipient caries
- occult caries
- cavitation
Caries based on progression.
- Arrested
- recurrent
- radiation
Caries based on chronology
- infancy
- adolescent
- adult
Caries based on hard tissues
- enamel
- dentin
- cementum
Caries based on WHO
D1- clinically detectable enamel lesions with intact surface
D2- clinically detectable cavity limited to enamel
D3- clinically detectable cavities in dentin
D4- lesions extending to the pulp
Interproximal caries based on radiography
Incipient caries
Moderate caries
Advanced caries
Severe caries
Interproximal caries-Incipient caries
- less than 1/2 of the thickness of enamel
- usually not restored
- treat with fluoride
Interproximal caries- Moderate caries
- greater than 1/2 enamel
- not including DEJ
Interproximal caries- Advanced caries
- involves enamel and dej
- less than 1/2 distance to pulp cavity
Interproximal caries-severe caries
More than 1/2 distance of dentin to pulp cavity
Newer classification
enamel caries
Divided as per tissue involve
- enamel noncavitated(e-nc)
- enamel cavitation (e-c)
- enamel extensive(e-ext)
- dentinal superficial(d-s)
- dentinal deep(d-d)
- dentinal extensive(d-ext)
All the cavitation caries is subdivided..
OAL- occusally approachable lesion
PAL- proximally approachable lesion
BAL/LAL- bucally or lingualy approachable lesion
Highest caries susceptibility teeth? What%?
Upper and lower first molar -95%
Lowest caries susceptibility teeth? What %?
Lower CI & LI-3%
Lower canine -3%
Caries classification based on severity and rate of caries progression?
Class 1- very mild caries Class 2- mild caries Class 3- moderate caries Class 4-severe caries Class 5-rampant/ very severe caries

Grade 1 surface texture,depth, pigmentation
Soft, no surface defect, light tan brown
Grade 2 surface texture,depth, pigmentation
Soft-irregular rough, <0.5mm, tan dark brown
Grade 3 surface texture,depth, pigmentation
Soft, > 0.5mm-no pulp involvement, light dark brown
Grade 4 surface texture,depth, pigmentation
-, deeeply penetrated , brown dark brown
