Density, Dimensional Analysis, & Significant Figures Flashcards
What is density?
Density is the comparison of how much matter there us in a certain amount of space.
What is the Density Formula and Triangle?
density = mass/volume triangle= mass- top & Density - left bottom & Volume - right bottom
When would you use the displacement method?
It is used for accurately measuring the volume go an odd shape.
What are the steps of the displacement method?
- Partially fill your graduated cylinder with water. (note the initial volume)
- Gently insert the object into the cylinder ( note the final volume)
- Calculate the change in volume
Dimensional Analysis #1
Question: A weightlifter can lift 495lbs. How many kg is that? 1kg = 2.2 lbs
Answer: 495lbs (1kg/ 2.2lbs) = 495/2.2 = 225 kg
Dimensional Analysis #2
Question: If a space shuttle can travel 17,000 miles per hour, how many meters can it travel per second.
Answer: (17000 miles/1hr) (1.609km/1mile) (1000m/1km) (1hr/60min) (1min/60sec) = 7.6 x 10 3rd m/s
What are the steps to finding the significant figure?
- count all integers not including zeros
- count all zeros that occur between integers
- Leading zeros are not significant
- only count if the is a decimal next to the trailing zeros
