Density Flashcards
what is the equation for density
the equation for density is p=m/V
p is is Greek letter Rho
m is Mass
V is volume
what Is upthrust and when does it occur
upthrust is the force that keeps the object afloat.
it occurs when an object’s density is lower than the density of the water
what does the ‘Law Of Displacement’ state
the law of displacement states that an object fully submerged in a fluid will replace an amount of fluid equal to its own volume
what is the unit for density
the unit for density is kg/m3
what is the unit for mass
the unit for mass is kg
what is the unit for volume
the unit for volume is m3
If mass is 10 kg and volume is 2.5 metres cubed, what is the density of the object?
4kg/m3
what instrument can be used to measure the mass of an object
a balance scale
volume displaced is equal to what
volume of crown
how do you calculate the density of irregular shaped objects
1) For solids, we can use the Law of Displacement to estimate its volume.
2) This is done by using a displacement can, or a graduated measuring cylinder.
3) The volume of the water that flows out the can and into the cylinder is measured, and this is the volume of the object.
how do you calculate the density of liquids
1) For measuring the density of liquids, place a measuring cylinder on a balance and set the reading to zero.
2) Pour the liquid into the cylinder and write down its mass and volume. Then calculate the density.
you can measure volume using what 2 apparatus
1) Measuring Cylinder
2) Displacement Can
density is the measure of what?
density is the measure of how concentrated an objects mass is
