Density Flashcards
Learn about Density
What is density?
Density is a measure of HOW MUCH MASS there is in a CERTAIN SPACE.
How can you work out density?( formula )
Density (kg/m3) = mass (kg) ÷ volume (m3)
P = m ÷v
What is denser than liquids?
Solids
What is denser than gases?
Liquids
Example: A 0.0020 m3 block of aluminium has a mass of 5.4 kg
Calculate the density of aluminium
Density = mass ÷ volume
= 5.4 ÷ 0.0020
= 2700 kg/m3
What is the volume of a cuboid?
Length × width × height
How to find density of an irregularly-shaped object
Step one
Use A BALANCE to measure it’s MASS
Step two
FILL a DISPLACEMENT CAN (a can with a SPOUT in its side) with WATER so the water level is ABOVE the spout.
Step 3
Let the water drain from the spout, leaving the water level JUST BELOW the start of the spout.
Step 4
Place a MEASURUNG CYLINDER under the spout
Step 5
Place your object INTO THE WATER.
This will PUSH some of the water OUT through the spout.
Step 6
MEASURE THE VOLUME of water that has collected in the measuring cylinder.
Step 7
This is EQUAL TO the VOLUME of the OBJECT
Step 8
Use the FORMULA above to find the objects DENSITY
To find the density of a liquid
Step 1 (liquid)
Place a MEASURING CYLINDER on a balance and ZERO the balance
Step 2 (liquid)
Pour 50 ML of the liquid into the measuring cylinder
Step 3 (liquid)
Record the liquid’s MASS shown on the mass balance
Step 4 (liquid)
Use the FORMULA to find the DENSITY. The VOLUME is 50 CM3, or 0.00005 M3.
What di you need to remember when finding the density of a liquid and the density of an irregularly-shaped object
1 ml = 1cm3 and that
1 cm3 = 0.000001 m3.
