Density Flashcards
What is density?
Density is a measure of the mass contained in a given volume. (how compacted the particles are)
What happens when a substance with a lower density is placed on substances with higher density? Why?
A substance with a lower density will float on substances with higher substances because the lower density is lighter which means it’s held up by the thicker substance aka the higher density
what is the PTM? (particle theory of matter)
- Different substances have different sized particles.
- There are spaces between the particles.
- The greater the spaces, the less particles therefore the lower density.
- In general gases are less sense than liquids and liquids are less dense than solids.
What must you know to determine the density of a substance?
The amount of matter in a substance (aka mass)
The amount of space occupied by the substance (aka volume)
How do you measure the volume of a irregular shape?
To measure the volume of a irregular shape, you will need to determine the amount of water it displaces.
What order does the triangle go in?
Mass on top, Density on the bottom left, Volume on the bottom right.
The line going horizontally resembles division, and the line going vertically resembles multiplication.
What are the formulas for finding Density, Volume, and Mass.
D = mass divided by volume (d= m/v)
V = mass divided by density (v= m/d)
M = density x volume (m= d*v)
What would happen if you increased tempature in a substance?
Increasing temperature will cause the particles in the substance to gain energy, spread out and take up less space, resulting in decreased density because it’s thinner.
High density = _______
High density = thicker
Low density = ________
Low density = thinner
