density Flashcards
(53 cards)
What is Density?
Density is the ratio of mass to volume. This physical property is often used to identify and classify substances.
Formula for Density
Density =
Mass/Volume
Density is expressed in
g/mL or g/cm^3
What is Mass?
The amount of matter in an object
Formula for Mass
Mass = Density
× Volume
Mass is expressed in
Grams (g)
What is Volume?
The amount of space an object takes up
Three Formulas for Volume
- Length x Width
× Height - Volume =
Mass/Density - Final Vol. - Initial
Vol. = Object Vol.
(volume by displacement)
Volume is expressed in
cubic meters (cm^3) or milliliters (mL)
How do you find the volume of an irregular object?
Submerge the object in water inside a graduated cylinder, then use the water
displacement
formula. (Final Vol. -
Initial Vol. = Obiect
Vol.)
How do you know when to use cubic meters or milliliters?
cm^3 = Solids & mL
= Liquids (these are equal)
Does density change with temperature?
Explain.
Yes, heating an object generally causes it to expand.
For objects with equal volumes..
The denser object will have a larger mass.
For objects with equal masses…
The denser object will have a smaller volume.
What is the density of Water?
1 g/mL
If the density of an object is less than 1..
It will Float
If the density of an object is greater than 1..
It will Sink
What do all objects that float have in common?
They have a larger volume than mass
What do all objects that sink have in common?
They have a larger mass than volume
Does mass or volume alone determine whether an object will sink or float?
No, you need both mass and volume to determine
What is a Miniscus?
The meniscus is the dip in water usually seen in a measuring cylinder. (this is where you determine your measUrement)
How do you find the measurment scale on a Graduated
Cylinder?
Take two given measurements on the cylinder (ex. 60 mL and 50 mL) and subtract (you get 10 mL). Take this answer and divide
it by 10 (10mL/10 = 1
mL). Your answer will be the measurement scale (in this example, the scale goes by ones).
What do you round to when Measuring in a Graduated
Cylinder?
Find the known values first (which are before the decimal point), and then estimate the last digit (which will go after the decimal point
What is an Atom?
The smallest particle of an element
