A

Situation, Task, Assessment, Response

Parts of teamwork

  • Role allocation
  • Setting a clear direction
  • Mutual accountability
  • Principled leadership -> Our supervisor, who was very clear about the limits of our involvement

General challenges

  • New role, getting to grips with teaching as well as COVID
  • Working out how to recruit tutors - AB testing!
  • Best ways of getting feedback

Specific challenge

  • First time we had students in, very frantic, new system, one way flow, all students had to be wearing PPE
  • Not enough PPE! Called time-out, allocated responsibilities
  • Feedback was v good but felt rushed

Weaknesses

  • Very collaborative
  • No clear leadership
  • Issues from other problems can leak over

A

Soundmasking
- Faciltative leadership
- Making sure others voices are heard
- Pushing people along
- Bringing together the necessary parties
- Explaining the big picture
- Not the most senior person involved, but had access to the whole perspective!
- Challenges -> Especially in COVId virtual world, making sure to be organised and pre-booking meeting in advance. Making sure relevant buy-in.
Challenging things I felt were wrong
Quote came through which was very expensive ->

Realised this was very similar to public health -> Levers of change in public health are other people with more expertise in their specific departments that yourself.

Q

Give a time you made a mistake

A

Ascitic drain

  • Leadership position
  • Supervising less experienced, more junior colleagues

What was the mistake?

  • Junior went and talked to the patient, seemed very vague when reporting on the drain. Quite important clinically to know exactly how much was in there and how much in bag. New issue - patient expressing suicidal ideation. However, didn’t take action at the time.
  • Knew it was complex, knew that I had a supervising role.
  • Junior seemed keen. Not much experience, so did not know why it was important to check amount of fluid.

Mitigating

  • Rusty clinically myself!
  • Unclear about hierarchical position

What would I do differently?

  • Been more assertive in checking this complex patient myself
  • Followed my gut that the junior hadn’t quite done the job properly
  • Recognised the danger when multiple complex issues
  • Be more confident in myself as a senior
  • Recognised that my junior was struggling and hadn’t quite got the details right.
