- Baby boomer generation - resulted a large number of individuals reaching retirement age.
what are the effect of an ageing population
- public services - higher demand for healthcare services including long-term care and medical assistance, strain of the health systems.
- one-person pensioner households - may rely on a fixed pension income
- the dependancy ratio - ratio of dependants to the working age tend to rise. Working generation contributing to the economy while a larger proportion relies on them for support.

In terms of gender women tend to live longer than men but may experience higher rates in poverty due to lower lifetime earnings due to caregiving and responsibilities.
