-5 stage diagram
Based on the experience of England after 1700
Stage 1: before 1750
-death rates high (black death wiped out 1/3 of Europe in 14th century)
-famine due to bad weather
- war
- birth rate high due to high infant mortality so more kids needed to work as most families were farmers
fluctuations in stage 1 caused by
- birth rate rises and death rate falls at times of good harvest
-bad harvests, war, disease cause fallen birth rates and higher death rates. Women married later in these times
*Because birth rate and death rate were high at opposing times they cancelled each other out and natural increase rates were low.
stage 2: 1750-1880
death rate fell due to:
- better hygiene reduced death

-agricultural revolution (improved farming methods) and import of grain from North America meant more successful crops and more food available.
