Democracy - Voting Systems Flashcards
1
Q
Explain, in detail, why the voting system used to elect MSP’s to the Scottish Parliament is effective.
A
- Proportional System, the percentage of seats a party gains is closer the the percentage of votes they get. For example; in 2021, the conservatives gained 23.5% of the vote and 24% of seats.
- Direct Constituency Representative, in the first constituency vote, people are voting for a representative of the local area. For example; Siobhan Brown is the constituency MSP for Ayr.
- Greater Choice, voters get two votes and can vote for two different parties. For example; some people may vote SNP the first vote, then Greens the next.
