What is FPTP?
the candidate with the most votes wins no matter how many votes all the other candidates got and how slim the margin is
3 advantages of FPTP
•simple to understand
•fast to count the votes and announce who won
•doesnt cost much to use
3 Disadvantages of FPTP
• candidates can be elected with a small amount of public support
• seats are allocated based on votes not actual support
• encourages tactical voting so ppl vote against the party they dont like instead of for the candidate they prefer most
What is a majority government?
one party wins more than half of the seats in parliament and they can be confident abt passing most of their policies into laws bc their MPs would be expected to vote the same way
