What is free vote?
MPs can vote without thinking about what the party, nation, their constituency or personal thoughts
What is a manifesto?
A manifesto is a list of policies that a political party says the will implement if they are elected
What is a mandate?
To make sure the party will stick to their promises
What is meant by pluralism and elitism?
Pluralism- Encourages participation and allows for free and fair competition between competing interests
Elitism- The majority seems insignificant and the minority have power
What functions/ roles do a political party perform?
- Representation of the electorate
- Political recruitment
- Policy formulation
- Participation
- Provide a stable government
What is a catch all party?
A political party may decide to broaden their polices across the political spectrum to catch every possible voter
What is a:
- One party system
- Dominant party system
- Two party system
- Multi party system
- pThere is only one party to vote for e.g. North Korea
- When there are other parties but one party always wins
- When it’s like a race between two parties again multiple parties may exist but in an election is always between two parties
- When there are lots of small parties that all have an equal chance of being elected

Disadvantages More than 2 choices FPTP- most people aren't represented 2 main parties may become catch all parties Adversary politics- suggests conflict Dissatisfied voters
