Dementia Flashcards
Dementia
A progressive and Irreversible loss of brain function
Dementia - Alzheimer’s Disease
Most common form of Dementia
- Build up of proteins in and around brain cells. Thus inhibiting messages being transmitted between cells - leading to impaired brain function
Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease
- Memory Loss
- Impaired thinking skills
- Abnormal behaviours or emotions
Vascular Dementia
Often resulted from a stoke, a reduced blood flow in the brain leading to less oxygen and nutrient uptake by brain cells. Thus cell functioning is impaired
Symptoms of Vascular Dementia
Problems with:
- Attention
- Spatial awareness
- Planning
- Reasoning
- Judgement
Dementia with Lewy Bodies
Caused by proteins known as Lewy bodies inside the nerve cells of the brain which result in the degeneration or death of nerve cells
Symptoms of Dementia with Lewy Bodies
- Visual Hallucinaions
- Attention problems
- Tremors
- Confusion
Frontotemporal Dementia
Damage to the Frontal lobe and the Temporal lobe
