Dementia Flashcards
What is Dementia?
Progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects all aspects of higher cognitive function including memory, intellect, personality and behaviour
What area of the brain does dementia mostly affect?
Primarily affects cells of cerebral cortex
What mechanism of neuro-degeneration affects dementia?
Accumulation of misfolded proteins proteins within the cells of the cerebral cortex causing the formation of toxic fragments called beta amyloids
These damage synapses etc disrupt cellular function and leading to inflammation of nerual tissues
What is the most common form of dementia?
Alzheimers
How many people have dementia?
35.7 million people
Name the different types of dementia
Vascular
Lewy-Body
Fontrotemporal Dementia
Alzhiemers
What is vascular Dementia?
Second most common
Characterised by multiple mini strokes throughout the cerebral cortex
What is Lewy Body Dementia?
Accumulation of misfolded proteins, particularly Lew Body protein
Shares features with Alzheimers and Parkinson’s
What is Frontotemporal Dementia?
Progressive degeneration of frontol and or temproal lobes of the brain
Therefore, symptoms include behaviour, language, personality rather than memory
