Delays Flashcards
Know the differences between all delays and how they work
How does tape delay work?
Works by recording sound onto a piece of tape
The sound then travels all the way around the tape
The playhead head then plays the sound back
History of tape delay
Invented in the 1950s
One of the first effects being created
Characteristics of tape delay
Warm, saturated tone
Some distortion and degradation to the delayed signal for a more vintage, natural sound
History of analogue delay
Introduction of Bucket Brigade Device in the 1970s
The idea of water being lost every time when they’re being moved from one bucket to another
How does analogue delay work?
Short amount of audio are passed between various virtual storage areas
Each time it passes there is a small loss of quality
Characteristics of analogue delay
The sound loses clarity as the quality reduces overtime
Can be used to allow other audios to overlay on top of it
History of digital delay
Emerged in the 1980s
Became possible through the use of Digital Signal Processors (DSPs)
How does digital delay work?
Converts the signal to digital via an ADC (Analogue-to-Digital Converter)
Stores the audio internally and delays the signal without losing any quality of the sound
Converts the signal back to a analogue via a DAC (Digital-to-Analogue Converter)
Characteristics of digital delay
The feedback doesn’t lose its clarity
But it can overlay onto other audio tracks
