Delay-based effects Flashcards
Learn the uses and how different delay-based effects work
How does flanger work physically?
Gently pressing on the ‘flange’ of one so that they went out of sync
How does flanger work digitally?
Delaying a signal and changing the length of the delay
What does flanger do?
Delaying a signal and modulates the length of the delay
Sound characteristics of a flanger
Comb filtering-Sounds combined with a very short delay of itself, causing some frequencies to get louder (Because they line up), and some frequencies get quieter (Because they cancel out)
Leading to a whooshing and metallic sound
What does a chorus do?
Delaying a signal and changing the pitch of the delay
Sound characteristics of a chorus
Sounds like several instruments playing the same part with micro variances in pitch (Pitch variance controlled by an LFO)
How does digital reverb work?
As a signal reaches a reflective surface, it bounces back
This happens on every surface
The reflection then bounce back themselves
Every time the signal is degraded
Electronic reverb
Recreates all the repeats
Each signal is a tiny delay with some degradation
