Delayed Language Disorder Flashcards
Types of DLD
Primary DLD (language is biggest problem)
DLD co existing with literacy disorders
DLD secondary to developmental disorders (ASD/Down syndrome)
Language delay
Failure to develop language abilities on the usual development timetable
Key characteristics of DLD
Form - grammar, problems w wh questions and understanding complex syntax
Content - decreased vocabulary, slow learning new words, decreased word flexibility
Use - immature vs abnormal, turn taking problems and initiating topics
Problems with mental age referencing
Not acceptable to compare scores on a test that weren’t designed to be compared or made for same population
Problems with using age equivalents to determine abnormal performance
Language can lead…
Cognitive development
IDEA 2004 says that…
Services are to be determines on an individual basis
BUT, mental age provides …
Guidelines for determining treatment goals
2 ways to categorize language delay
Etiological - (categorical)
Descriptive development (identifies strengths and needs)
Etiological categorization of LD
Classified by cause, diagnostic causes plays role
Understandable way to categorize problem
Summarizes how children are different and helps guide Tx
Limitations of categorizing LD with Etiological
Children don’t fit neatly into one category
Implies that there is only one cause of LD
Descriptive development approach to categorize LD
Identifies strengths and needs
Includes children with difficulties in: learning linguistic form, conceptualizing and formulating ideas, language use and integrating form, content, and use
Normal developmental sequence provides tx goals
Goals of DLD assessment
Determine if significant impairment is in form, content, or use
Describe deficit relative to normal development
Determine how deficit effects daily activities
Determine causal factors
Assessment involves
Identifying child’s needs, families concern, extent of services needed
Activities are less formal
Use multiple tools
Focus on what needs to be done to help
DLD may show patterns (in brain)…
Using MRI and Electrophysiological measures
May show atypical patterns of asymmetry in language cortex
Possible smaller heschl’s gyrus
We use chronological age over mental age because…
Language skills aren’t expected to be better than development
