Approahces to Assessment Flashcards
Sub type of appraisal diagnosis model
Psychometric approach - use of standardized norm references tests
Enables assessment of broad content
High reliability and validity but does not consider complex language and not appropriate for many clients
Appraisal diagnosis model (medical)
Appraisal
Diagnosis - interpret data to determine problem and differentiate problem from others
Emphasizes classification of problem and possible causes
Problem internal to client - so nature/cause can be determined through examination (tx depends on cause)
Descriptive developmental model (behavorists)
Appraisal/diagnosis less distinct
Emphasizes clients present communication behaviors over cause or category
Describes performance with academics and social involvement
Problem is internal to client
Sub type of descriptive developmental model
Descriptive approach (authentic assessment)
Focuses on describing behaviors, spontaneous language sampling and observation
Impact on everyday communication
Heavily relies on clinicians expertise
Advantages to descriptive approach
Can apply own theoretical model to assessment
Clinician process is flexible and tuned to clients needs
Must understand biological, cognitive, psychological, social and environmental factors
Reveals info about content, form, and use in daily living
Disadvantages to descriptive approach
Level of language expertise needed to elicit and analyze sample
Amount of time needed to collect and analyze language
Reliability and validity of sample
Systems model
Stresses importance of family and social/cultural context
Observing in natural settings
