Delay Flashcards
How does delay work
Receives an input signal, holds it for the specified time and then outputs it
Why do we use delays
Short delays can be used to thicken the texture of a sound
Timed delays can be used to create new rhythmic elements
Can be used to fill in space between phrases
Can add ambience
What is delay time
The length of time the signal is delayed for
Can be in milliseconds or in musical note length
What is feedback
The amount of output signal being sent back into the inpit
Measured in percent
What is mix
This determines the volume of dry signal and wet signal
What is slapback delay
A quick single repeat delay
What is the delay time of slapback delay
80-150 ms
What is ADT
Artificial double tracking/ doubling echo
What is the delay time of ADT
20-40 ms
What is timed delay
The delay is synchronised with the tempo of the track so that the repetitions play in time with the music
What is ping pong delay
There are multiple repetitions
Each repetition is alternating between left and right
What are the types of delay
Slapback
Timed
Piano pong
Multi tap
How can you describe delay time
Crotchets
Quavers
Minims
Triplet quavers
Short / long
How can you describe the feedback
No feedback - 1 repetition
Low feedback - 2 or 3 repetitions
Medium feedback 4 - 6 repetitions
High feedback - 6+ repetitions
How do you describe mix
Similar dry / wet levels
High wet level
Low wet level
How would you describe the stereo field
Dry signal is panned left and wet signal is panned right
Dry signal is panned to the centre but repetitions alternate
