CULTURE
“The learned and shared beliefs, values,norms, and traditions of a particular group, which guide our thinking, decisions, & actions.
WORLDVIEW
A set of assumptions that begins to develop during childhood and guides how one sees, thinks about, experiences, and interprets the world
ASSUMPTIONS
- Nursing care is culturally congruent when the nurse knows the clients.
- If clients receive nursing care that is not at least reasonably culturally congruent, then the client will demonstrate signs of stress, noncompliance, cultural conflicts, and/or ethical or moral concerns
Cultural Care Preservation (Maintenance)
Nursing care activities that help individuals retain and use core cultural care values related to healthcare concerns or conditions
Cultural Care Accommodation (Negotiation)
Nursing actions that help individuals adapt or negotiate with others in the healthcare community to attain the shared goal of an optimal health outcome
Cultural Care Re-Patterning (Restructuring)
Actions that help a patient modify personal health behaviors towards beneficial outcomes while respecting the patient’s cultural values. This is suggested when certain cultural practices may cause harm to the patient/others in surrounding environment
IMPLICIT BIAS
Biases we are unaware of and that happens outside of our control, which is influenced by our personal background, cultural environment, and personal experiences.

CLAS Standards
- Ensure that qualified translators (written word) and interpreters (spoken word) are provided to every patient with limited English proficiency.
- Providers must notify patients of their right to these services
- Do not use family members to translate or interpret medical information
