TRIETHYL PHOSPHATE
Combustible at 110-120°F
Toxic by ingestion, inhalation and skin contact
Toxic to reproductive fetal, urinary and blood systems
Decomposes upon exposure to sunlight
ETHYLENE GLYCOL MONOETHYL ETHER/
CELLUSOLVE
PURPOSE: fix and dehydrate
Not commonly used: evaporates easily and highly
flammable
Only used for urgent biopsies (fast acting) and not for
routine dehydration
ACETONE
Can act both as dehydrating and clearing agent
Tissues tend to ribbon poorly
Main disadvantage: extremely dangerous/ toxic to
man
DIETHYLENE DIOXIDE/ DIOXANE
Can dehydrate and clear tissues
Toxic if ingested or inhaled
Vapors causes nausea, dizziness and headache
With offensive odor, room should be well ventilated
May cause conjunctival irritation
TETRAHYDROFURAN/ THF
Used for plant & animal micro techniques
BUTYL ALCOHOL
BUTANOL
